The Research Behind Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
If you’ve ever wondered whether Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) really works, you’re not
alone. It seems “too good to be true”, and many people want to know if it could work for them before trying it. ART is supported by research showing it can help people heal from trauma, anxiety, grief, and distressing memories—often in just a few sessions.
What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a brief, evidence-based therapy that helps people process painful memories using guided eye movements. During an ART session, clients think about a distressing memory while following the therapist’s hand with their eyes. This process helps the brain “recode” the memory so it no longer triggers strong emotional or physical reactions.
What the Research Shows
Several studies have found ART to be a fast and effective treatment for trauma and related symptoms:
Military and Veterans: In one study of U.S. service members, ART led to major drops in PTSD, depression, and anxiety after about four sessions. Learn more here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24306011/
Cancer Survivors: ART helped cancer survivors lower their level of trauma response, and anxiety symptoms after only five sessions, with improvements lasting at least a month later. Learn more here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39902953/
Grief and Loss: In a study of caregivers coping with complicated grief (lasting over 12 months), ART significantly reduced the average feelings of sadness, trauma, and depression after only four sessions. Learn more here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31960705/
While most research so far has been small groups of participants, the results are consistent and encouraging. More studies are underway to confirm what therapists and clients already see in practice: ART often works – quickly.
Why This Matters
ART gives hope to people who have tried traditional talk therapy but still feel stuck. It’s a focused approach that doesn’t require talking in detail about painful events. The goal is simple—to help your brain store those memories in a way that no longer causes distress.
Is ART Right for You?
If you struggle with trauma responses or distressing memories, ART might be a great fit. Things like flashbacks, feeling “triggered”, “overreacting” to the same kinds of situations: these are all examples of symptoms that are often targeted with ART.
