Couples Therapy

At A Couple of Therapists, we understand how painful and confusing it can be when your relationship feels disconnected. Maybe communication has broken down. Maybe you feel more like roommates than partners. Or maybe you’re stuck in the same argument on repeat and don’t know how to move forward.

You don’t have to figure this out alone.
Located right here in Cedar Falls, Iowa, we specialize in helping couples rebuild trust, strengthen communication, and rediscover the connection that brought them together.

Every relationship has ups and downs—but when the tough times start to feel permanent, it’s time to get support. Couples counseling can help when:

  • Arguments feel endless or unresolved

  • Intimacy and connection are fading

  • You’re recovering from betrayal or a major life change

  • You feel emotionally distant, misunderstood, or stuck

  • You want to improve your relationship before marriage or after years together

Our job isn’t to judge. It’s to help you understand what’s happening in your relationship and guide you back to one another—whether that means small course corrections or deeper healing.

Why Consider Couples Therapy?

What You Can Expect at A Couple of Therapists

At our Cedar Falls office, we work with couples of all backgrounds and identities. We create a calm, supportive space where both partners feel heard. Our approach is grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), one of the most research-supported methods for improving relationships.

With us, you’ll:

  • Gain tools to communicate more clearly

  • Understand the emotional patterns that are keeping you stuck

  • Learn how to reconnect emotionally and physically

  • Work through past pain in a respectful, productive way

  • Build new habits of closeness and mutual support

Whether you’ve been married for decades or are newly committed, we tailor therapy to fit your relationship’s unique needs and goals.

Meet Josh Swanson, LMFT

For many couples in Iowa, navigating intimacy and communication can feel like an uphill battle. You might find yourself holding back from saying what you really need. Maybe you worry your partner won’t understand—or worse, will take it personally. Conversations that should bring you closer may end in tension, silence, or feeling completely disconnected.

You're not alone—and it doesn't have to stay this way.

I’m Josh Swanson, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and co-founder of A Couple of Therapists in Cedar Falls. I specialize in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Sex Therapy, working with couples and individuals who want to deepen connection, rebuild trust, and create relationships where both partners feel secure, heard, and intimately connected.

In our work together, we’ll identify the emotional patterns that keep you stuck—like feeling shut down, over-accommodating, or stuck in conflict—and learn to replace those with new ways of communicating that feel clear, compassionate, and affirming.

Couples counseling isn’t about assigning blame. It’s about understanding your emotional and physical needs, learning how to express them without fear, and creating space for your partner to do the same.

If you’ve ever felt like your needs don’t matter, or like you have to choose between honesty and harmony, therapy offers a better way. Whether you're unsure how to ask for what you want, or you’re with a partner who shuts down when you do, our sessions will give you both the tools to connect more confidently and lovingly.

While we’ll focus on improving your emotional bond, we’ll also explore how that connection affects intimacy, desire, and physical closeness. My approach is affirming, sex-positive, and judgment-free. Your comfort, curiosity, and pleasure are part of the process—not separate from it.

You deserve a relationship that feels safe, open, and deeply fulfilling. Whether you’ve been together for years or are just starting your journey as a couple, I’m here to help you move from disconnection to closeness.

Let’s start the work together.
